(Story of Jeju island) Story of Seolmoondae grandmother. -A Legend of Jeju island

Long time ago, I don't know when but it's long time ago there was a great big giant old lady. Her name was Seolmoondae grandma. She came from Sky to middle of ocean. Then she carried earth from here and there to make a big island in the middle of ocean. That's Jeju island. after that she made a big mountain in the middle of the island. that's Hallasan Mt. She had decided to live in the mountain. No one knows who was her husband, she had 500 children. One day all 500 children went down to the mountain to get food and hunting.

She Seolmoondae grandma alone started cooking big portion of porridge for her children. The pot was very big. Imagine! For 500 hundred sons that was supposed be very big. She was standing on the pot and stirring the porridge then by mistake she fell in the porridge. She died.

After that the 500 children came back home. They were very hungry. They spoted the porridge boiling in the pot. They ran down to the porridge and hurry to eat. It was very delicious. They were devouring the porridge. When they almost finish it, there were some bones on the bottom of the pot. Suddenly they realized there was no mother in home. They looking for their mother. Mother! Mother! We are home! Where are you? They found they ate their own mother.

All five hundreds sons but one who was youngest son were crying crying. " I am sorry, mother, we ate you..." The one arrived late saw all his brothers were crying. He said "What's going on here?" He wondered. When he found out all his brothers ate their own mother, he blamed his brothers for that. "I can't stay with you anymore, I'll leave" He left home. Due to their too much crying 499 sons have petrified rocks. The last one also had been petrified a rock. When he left Jeju island he looked back home one last time with lingering regret.

If you look at Hallasan Mt, it looks like a woman lying downing facing on sky with long hair. That's Seolmoondae grandmother's face. In the Hallasan Mt, there is a deep valley named Youngsil with many big rocks. We call the rocks Seolmoondae grandmother's sond. The last one is located as a rock on Chagwido island that is located on the west tip of island in Jeju island.

2024. 12. 2.
The lava forest named ‘Got-jawal’ in Jeju island is a unique forest. Originally, the word Gotjawal is a combination of two words, ‘got’ and ‘jawal’. ‘Got’ means bush with thorns and ‘Jawal’ means a place with gravels and rocks in the forest.

Since when the word ‘Gotjawal’ has been used to refer to this unique forest that can be only found in Jeju island. In fact, the word 'Gotjawal' is said to have been created by the late Song Si-tae by combining 'Got' and 'Jawal' while he was studying this forest.

We can find the characteristics of’Gotjawal’ in the creation of Jeju island that was formed recently compared to the mainland Korean peninsula. The Korean peninsula was formed around 1 billion 500 million years ago and Jeju island was formed around 1 million 400 thousands years ago. It’s very time different. The characteristic of the mainland is that because it is old, granite that hardened underground and became lava is exposed on the surface. But compared to this, the land of Jeju Island is very young, so it still appears less weathered.

Here, ‘weathering’ refers to the process in which large stones turn into soil over a long period of time as rocks and water are affected by temperature. Jeju Island is famous for having rough soil and lots of rocks because it has not been weathered much. This also applies to Jeju Island’s forests. If you go into Jeju Island’s forests, there are more rocks than soil. These rocks are formed when lava flows became hardens. When volcano erupted lava flows and it becomes hardens then it has been broken into pieces over time. After that a forest has been formed on top of these broken rocks. The forest of Jeju island formed this way is called ‘Gotjawal.’

There are lots of rocks which has not yet been weathered yet in the Gotjawal forests

Gotjawal is a forest that formed on a terrain where lava flows and becomes rocks. Another characteristic of lava flows is lava tubes. The process of forming a lava tubes is that when low viscosity lava flows, the outer surface hardens and it becomes rock, and when all the hot liquid lava inside soaked out, an empty space is created. This is the process of creating a lava tubes. It could be big or small ones. Anyway, then, when the solidified lava flows and splits and becomes rocks and piles up, an empty space is created inside. This empty space collapses over time. The terrain where the lava cave and lava tube are exposed by this collapse is called ‘sumgol.’

What role does this ‘sumgol’ play in the Gotjawal forest? First, it stores water. Since there is an empty space underground, when it rains, water flows into it and acts as an underground water storage. Jeju Samdasoo, Jeju mineral water, is also drawn from here in Gotjawal. Second, it emits air of a certain temperature. The temperature of the air is said to be around 12-15 degrees. Since air of a similar temperature is always emitted, cold-temperate plants and temperate plants that would have disappeared long ago can still exist in Gotjawal forests. That is why southern-limit plants and northern-limit plants can coexist in Gotjawal. This is a unique feature of Gotjawal forests that does not exist in other forests.

‘Sumgol’ literally means breathing vent under ground of Gotjawal forest.

Then which plants are northern limit and which plants are southern limit plants? First of all, the ferns with tenacity survived. The representative southern ferns, wrinkled ferns, are commonly found around the Gotjawal Forest. The small ferns, which are usually found above 1,000m of sea level, are also found here in Gotjawal Provincial Park, Jeju, which is less than 300m above sea level. The raccoon ferns are said to be ferns found around the Amnok River in Korea. This raccoon ferns also coexist with other plants here. In particular, the Jeju Sam fern, a unique species found only on Jeju Island, is found in the Gotjawal Forest.

The reason why Jeju Island has such a unique lava forest among numerous volcanic areas around the world is because Jeju Island is a very young land, which means it is less weathered. Jeju Island is neither tropical nor temperate, but rather subtropical. Jeju Island is only about 110km from the mainland, but the warm current flowing around the island makes the winter mild. For this reason, Jeju Island has a subtropical climate.

In addition, the Gotjawal Forest is home to the 2nd class endangered wild plants designated by the Ministry of Environment, such as the dogwood and the bill tree, as well as 7 species of endangered animals, such as the hawk, the bald eagle, the great hawk, the palatine tit, and the long-tailed tit.

<span data-url="https://blog.kakaocdn.net/dn/Ty1rE/btsLRDkZ7Ie/ZgkGprgE3eKnSWcZUseSoK/img.jpg" data-phocus="https://blog.kakaocdn.net/dn/Ty1rE/btsLRDkZ7Ie/ZgkGprgE3eKnSWcZUseSoK/img.jpg" data-alt="Southern limited plant. Endangerd plant and only found in Jeju island.

Until a few decades ago, the Gotjawal forests of Jeju Island were useless land that could not be farmed. In the 1980s, golf courses began to be built one after another in Jeju Island, and most of them were built inside of the Gotjawal forests area. Not only golf courses, but also new cities were built on top of the Gotjawal forests by digging them up. As a result, the Gotjawal forests that remain in Jeju Island today are only those shown on the map below.

Jeju Island is already sick amidst endless debates over between development and preservation. I think we need intense research on how to develop and what to preserve. It will be too late to restore nature that has been destroyed once. The more you see and know, the more you feel the preciousness of it. I hope Jeju Island's lava forest 'Gotjawal' will not be destroyed any more.

(Jeju travel Mr.Dee) Three musketeers from Singapore

Her name is Mary Rachel who is from Singapore. As long as I remember she was one of my clients 4 years ago. And then few months ago I got a mail from her. Upon getting a mail from her I was little surprised because I could hardly remember who she is. Well, Then recalling all the clients I had then, I can vaguely remember them because they were quite loud women group. Anyway I was glad to hear from her. Thanks for remembering me.

The mail says that she wants to visit to Jeju island with her friends because she missed spring in Jeju that was so beautiful that time. Well...Spring of Jeju island? Yes, Cherry blossoms and yellow flowers are harmonized in spring time in Jeju island, I prefer fall though. Anyway blossoming of all kind of flowers is one of the quality for visitors at Jeju.

They finally arrived in Jeju and started a tour. Upon arriving of them, I hunched that they are crazy about taking photos. Meeting diverse people from all over the world makes me good opportunities to exchange the knowledge of each countries. According to their saying Singapore was parted from Malaysia in 1965 and started from a poor fishery village and has become a well off metropolitan country. I had talked a lot about politics, economy, and cultures. We had very interesting conversation while North and South Koreas are trying to reconcile.

During a conversation one thins I got impressed that they don't mind even though their country is a dictatorship. Well, as long as they have enough freedom, they seem not care about their politics much. I don't know if it's a good sign or not. However, there are different things between Korea and Singapore. In Korea General Park had led the country with a gun meanwhile Lee Quan Yu a leader of Singapore had led the country with a broom. Both countries have achieved economical development but the evaluation of each leaders are different from their own people.

Anyway, my clients love flowers in Jeju island. I didn't realized flowers in Jeju are that much beautiful, so pretty even to me. There was a photographer named Keo Mason who is an excellent photo maker. Later she sent me some photos which are like magic work. During 4 days we had visited most of good places as well as my hidden places. They endlessly pressed a camera shutter such as they likely to put all scenery of Jeju island in their camera.

As I am very interested in South Asian culture these day I learn lot of things from my clients. That is one of the merits in my job as a tour guide. And I like to have a tour with people who love taking pictures because they seem to know how to see beauty of things.

(Jeju travel Mr.Dee) Architect tour in Jeju.

(Church of sky on the reflexion of water)
I think it's very encouraging to see the pattern of Jeju tour is changing. So far people have thought that Jeju island is just normal honeymoon destination. However, people start being interested in diverse tour program. So, if you try to find to have meaningful tour in Jeju island, you can have many things to enjoy and rich your life.
People specifically looking or Eco tourism, Dark tourism, or Architecture tourism tend to come to Jeju island. last year I had Begium people for Architecture tour and this year is Danishes.
We visited Daum space 1, Sky church, Glass house, and Genious Loci. Most of them are works of Anto dadao and Itami Jun. I feel little shame for that. Because there are many works by Korean architectures'
Personally I prefer domestic arts which contains traits of Jeju island. If I made an Itinerary I would list Gwandeokjung which is symbolic building of Jeju, Castle of Shell which is one of first modern building in Seokwipo, and Teshipon which is practical house in Jeju in 1960s. etc.
My intention is to show Jeju buildings to my clients, not just famous foreign artists's work. Well, those building by famous foreign artists's works are worth visiting though.
Anyway, Thanks to working with architectures my level of appreciation of art seems to be improved.

(Jeju travel Mr.Dee) Power blogger Drew Binsky at Jeju

A few weeks ago I got a message from KTO(Korean Tourism Organization) that they requested me to take a tour with a blogger. The name of Blogger is Drew Binsky who is a very famous power blogger over the world travels all over the world to shoot a short video. One of his postings about North Korea got 9 million views. I thought It was so cool to have a tour with a power blogger. I always have been wondered how power bloggers work and post on their work. And It was a good chance to look into it.
On the first day, when I met him at the airport he was carrying just two bags. His luggage was so simple. I might bring a too big car for only two people(He and I). He is supposed to come with his Filipino girl friend but she couldn't come because of a visa problem. Anyway we headed to Manjanggul lava tube which is the longest lava tube in the world.
The theme of this tour was 'Romance in Jeju' but we have to change it. But it sounds ridicule to have a tour with two guys. I am very good at showing nature so I suggested that I want to show great nature in Jeju. He said he is good at filming nature too. Then we have decided to have a subject of 'Nature and Culture of Jeju island' Mangjanggul is one of UNESCO natural heritages in Jeju island. So, I decided to go there first.

Normally inside of the cave(tube) is damp and dripping water from the ceiling but this time it was so dry. Bit disappointed with much dry inside. However, he said he was impressed with the size and process of forming the tube. He was an English teacher in Korea for two years in PyeongTaek mainland. and have been a blogger since 2012. He have visited 115 countries so far including North Korea. Wow! 115 countries for five years! It was amazing. Traveling around all over the world by sponsorship to make a film could be my dream job.

He carry a small drone for his film. When I see his posting there are many drone shots. I think Jeju island is one of the best places for drone shot. Jeju island is a volcanic island and lava black stones and which beaches are well combination to give a great view. After Mangjanggul lava tube we headed to eastern part of Jeju island named Weoljungri. This place is famous for beautiful beaches and black stones. Yeah, he must fly a drone for the shot.

We have three famous fish in Jeju island. Merclrol, Seabrim, and oar fish. We call oar fish tail fish because it has a long silver color tail. Tail fish is the most expensive fish among them and that much it is delicious. Drew had it first time and he thumbs up for the taste. We enjoyed the dinner even though it's expensive.

Next day, we climbed up Seongsan Ilchulbong(sun rise peak) for the morning shot. Unfortunately it was cloudy to see the fine view beyond the volcanic crater. He really wanted to shot of a volcanic crater, so we went to A-Bu Oreom which is not high hill crater. The weather suddenly became good. Well, weather in Jeju island is notoriously fickle. Always changeable. Bad weather in the morning changed to be good in the afternoon. I think it's good sign for us.

Seogwipo city southern part of Jeju island is my home town. It might be prejudice but I think the most beautiful place in Jeju island is Seogwipo city. We have 6 big waterfalls and other small ones. Black cliffs with solitary rock is awesome. When we visited the Play K-Pop, receptionists gave us a good mini concert. It was so cool to listen real music. Ofcourse we had a photo with the beautiful girls.

Jungbang waterfall is the one which is cascading to the ocean directly. There are only three waterfalls falling down directly into the ocean in the world. Jungbang waterfall is the one of them. The more interesting thing is that water from the waterfall in Jeju island is spring or ground water comes from under the ground because Jeju island is a volcanic island, so whenever it rains water just penetrates into the ground and comes out near the shore. Seogwipo has lots of cliffs on the shore and water falls down from the cliffs. So cool city I live.

I had a pleasure to have a tour with him and learned lot. As I mentioned before he is a power blogger. I think lots of people want to be a power blogger. I want to be a power blogger too. So I tried to see how he works. One thing impressive is that he always write and takes pictures. He shot film for more than 6 hours for 2 minutes post. That mean lots of work. and always work. I asked him "why don't you write it after work?" then he said smiling. " If I don't write right now, I will forget the feeling of now, so I don't want to lose the feeling of right moment".

(Jeju travel Mr.Dee) MBC human documentary-Story of us

Early in the morning, there were a lot of text messages coming to my phone. "Hey? Donghak, I am watching you on the TV. I am surprised and It is very nice seeing you..." Even my elementary school teacher called me. Tanks to my job which is an English speaking tour guide in Jeju island, I had a chance to be on TV.

A few weeks ago I got a call from a TV writer Miss Ahn. She said that MBC broadcast staion wanted to make a 30 minutes documentary film about me and my profession. Because English speaking tour guiding for foreigners is not common thing in Jeju island, where is dominated by domestic and Chinese tourists. And beside of their suggestion, I was thinking to make a film on my tour guiding on my own. So being on public TV show would be a good idea for that. However, consent of me wan't enough to make a film because they needed a consent from my clients as well. And duet to no contact number there was no way to inform them in advance. 'Will they agree with being on TV? and, Even will they join my tour in positive way?" Suddenly I felt my brain heavy with so many questions and nervous for a project.

The more problem was that they wanted to take my family on the film as well. I had to give a second thought for that. I didn't want to reveal my privacy. It's bit reluctant to ask my family. Anyway I told my wife about this and she said snickerly that "well...It's a good chance to say truth that you are such a idle guy". Well, It was joke with a serious meaning, However, my kid was so gleeful to think of being on TV. Anyway, we had decided to be on TV. How many chances can we get our whole family on TV? and It can be a life memory.

The filming was divided into two parts. first part lasted 3 days, and second parts lasted 2 days. On the first day of starting to take a film, I and film director were waiting for the clients at the airport. As I mentioned I hadn't informed them about our filming in advance. 'Will they agree with that?' It was a first step for the filming to get an agreement from them. There are 6 people in the group. One was 4 people in Korean-American family and the other one was an Indian couple. Finally, we met them and introduced each other. Carefully asked for a consent for filming. They seemed bit embarrassed at first, but soon all of them said "Why not? It will be a good experiences for our Jeju tour" Yes! They were cool people.

As a camera kept following us, obviously it seemed my clients were nervous and uncomfortable. Even I was nervous that I couldn't do my guiding properly. Anyway on the first day I brought them to the stone cultural park and explained general knowledge of geology, culture, and history on Jeju island. Actually I love to explain about Jeju island to my clients when they show sincere interest. With doing a job I am good at, I felt confident and my clients seemed feel more comfortable on the camera. However, I felt like I was the one who got nervous mostly among us.

The next day, filming went on all day long. The tension being on the camera had gone and they started joking and playing in front of the camera. When they seemed comfortable, I felt comfortable as well. My guiding became more natural too. And thankfully the Indian couple dressed in Indian traditional costumes for the film. It added more diverse effect and interests for the show. The director was excited with the Indian couple.

It was a full and long day. I showed everything I could do in my tour program. I spared no efforts and it was fully rewarded. In the interview my clients gave a heartfelt compliment for my tour. Well, It was too much for me but I was delightful with what they said about me. The filming lasted two more days after we bided a farewell and more episodes came out. If you go to this site you can see a whole show.

https://db.tt/yVInLT93AA

(Jeju travel Mr.Dee) Beomseom-The island of last Mongolian descents.

In southern part of Jeju island there is an uninhabited island named Beoseom(literally meaning Tiger island). As you see the island it is a scenic and magnificent surrounded by lava columnar joints and eroded caves. However, the thing you can't miss is that the story on the island.

The story is that...
According to the history, Korea Dynasty had fought against Khubilai khan empire for 28 years. The war had started from Chingiz Khan era to Khubilai Khan. Through three times of invasions Korea Dynasty became occupied and even Jeju island at the end(1273).

Afterward Mongolian came to Jeju island they had established big ranches for raising Mongolian pony horses on the purpose of invasion to Japan. They had brought 160 finest Mongolian pony horses to Jeju island and started breeding. They had invaded Japan twice during 1257~1302 but failed due to the Typoon. Later the Typoon that had failed Mongolian invasions was named 'Kamikaje'(literally meaning 'a wind of god')

The Mongolians who raise and bred horses were called Mokho(nomads from North) have settled down Jeju island since that. Generations to generations for 120 years they had mingled with Jeju locals and gradually became Jeju people. But still Jeju island was occupied directly Mongolian government which was different situation going on from main land Korea.

About 100 years later, the circumstances of Asia was becoming rapidly changed. The power of Mongolian empire(Won Dynasty) had suddenly receded and at the same time the power of Myung Dynasty of Han Chineses was rising. And through the chaos Korea Dynasty had regained sovereignty from Mongolian empire(Won Dynasty).

When Myung Dynasty was established after expelled all Mongolian descents informed Korea government that Jeju island should be taken to Myung government. The reason was that Jeju was once controlled directly by Mongolians, so that it should be controlled by Myung government. So Korea government had decided to send an army to expel Mongolian descents(Mokho-nomad from north) out of Jeju island in order to take Jeju island before Myung Government.

Mokho had strongly resisted against Korea Army. They had a war, fight, killing, and at the end massacre. In the long run Mokhos who were being defeated had fled to Beoseom and made last defense line. However, they were all killed by Korea Army and Jeju island went under Korea Dynasty again.

This island is not only beautiful but also is rich in stories. At having sight seeing, if you appreciate the story with imagining the last Mongolian descents who were fighting against Korea Government it would be more impressive.

(Jeju travel Mr.Dee) tour with balloon artists

As I am a tour guide I meet diverse tourists from all over the world. Some times quite amazing experience I get from my job. This time my clients are balloon artists.
I saw people who do balloon art as their hobby but never seen as a profession. Well, they made so many things by blowing balloons. Interesting!

Wherever we stopped by such as a restaurant, shops, scenic places, they started making a balloon of art and gave them to local people as a gift. Of cause locals are so amazed by their performance and so happy when they got the presents.

The artist name is Dee and my name is Dee too. His Dee is an abbreviation of Daniel and mine is abbreviation of Donghak. Anyway we use same name.

We had a lot of conversation and slowly our subject went to Politics. I think politics is our common interesting. I think talking politics is the best way to get to know the circumstance of the countries and most of visitors are interested in our politic situation as well. However, sensitive things must be avoided.

First, we had talked about Trump and and prospect of future of America. They were really anti Trump. And the subject smoothly moved to a current president 'Park' and a huge protest in Seoul. It's shame for both of us because we had to talk bad thing about our presidents. And we both are worried the whole world is go to be nationalistic. Talking was going on and on and time went flies.

They were very interested in history of Korea and Jeju island. It took a lot of efforts to explain about the history from bottom to top such as Tamra kingdom, Mongolian occupation, uprising in Choseon Dynasty, April 3rd massacre. However, it's worth explaining all the details. The more they are interested, the more I wanted to explain. Let them know your culture and history is the purpose of my job,

I said " you should join a protest in Seoul and learn how to expel the president. Because you probably need it to get Trump down" he was laughing and agreed with that. Well, it was very enjoyable traveling with them.

When we farewell they made a quite a few arts of balloons for my kid.

<img src="https://t1.daumcdn.net/cfile/tistory/2649424A597082A334" srcset="https://img1.daumcdn.net/thumb/R1280x0/?scode=mtistory2&fname=https%3A%2F%2Ft1.daumcdn.net%2Fcfile%2Ftistory%2F2649424A597082A334"
(Jeju travel Mr.Dee) hepl me! I have 43 clients from India.

Well... 43 clients from India...I think there are too many people in my group but I am sure I can handle it. I think 4 days are bit long time to take all of them to show around jeju island. And there are also 6 handcapped people in the group. However, I have to try to handle with it. I know It's a big challenge for me.

People say handling Indian people are most difficult for tour guides. When a tour guide got a call from an agency for touring for Indaian people, they hesitate to take them. Because they

In my assume 4 days was bit long to take all of them around Jeju island. And even there were 6 handicapped people. So, It was a big challenge for me. As you know clients from Middle East, India, and Russia are well known for their picky characters.
There was no way to know what story would come out. It would be a good episode or terrible story.

It was a first day of tour with Indian clients.

It showed on the screen that the plane CX from HongKong arrived at the airport. After while People were coming out with their lots of luggages and there were some people coming out on a wheelchair taken by airline staffs. " I am sorry, we have to go back with wheelchairs. We can take them only here " the staffs told me that they can't take handicapped people out of a building of airport.

Well, it was a long distance to the parking place for them. So, I asked the driver to come here instead of our going there. But the driver denied that because of the ticket camera.

Anyway we could manage to go to the bus with a lot of luggages. Actually bus was full with 43 people.
After counting, there were 3 people short. I hurried running down to the building to find them. They were slowly coming towards. "I am sorry, we were smoking" Lame excuse they game me. I hunched it would be a difficult tour.

It took only 20 minutes to come to a hotel. While checking in, they just sat on chairs in private coffee shop and opened Indian cookies they brought and started eating. According to the rule of hotel, they shouldn't do that.

Hotel workers tried to stop them but it is already impossible because of a language barrier. They came to me to stop them. It already went chaos.

" How can I get WiFi?", "Can I get some water?" "I want some coffee for cookies" "Where can I wash my hands?" They just came to me ask bombarded. Come on... I was at lost. I couldn't find how can handle these people for 4 days.

On the way to dinner, my head was getting really heavy. I need a help. I have 43 clients from India.

Continued...

(Jeju travel Mr.Dee) Jeju horses running to the world: Equida documentary filming episide.

We started shooting a film about Jeu island from today to the end of this month. They are Point du jour international documentary film team from France. And this film will be aired in Channel EQUIDA and France5.

Actually, fixing is my favorite work in my profession. So I am quite excited now.

Sam is a French actress and writer and her husband Eric is a film producer. They asked me to be a presenter of the film. So will I be on air in French TV? Wow!

While filming I became nervous because he(Eric) put a camera on me very close.
So I think I made some mistakes. Well, I hope they will edit most of it.

we are going to shot actual Jeju island from tomorrow. I cross my fingers.

Second day for shooing
We had 3 hours long interview with a chair woman of Haenye and aftermath we hurried to the horse park.
It was too busy to have lunch, so we had a quick grab a bite in a car.

Shooting, acting and talking.
Same thing repeat again and again, then a day already gone.

They thumbed up and said that it's a good shooting but I wonder how it comes later.

Even though my jacket's been soaked wet since yesterday I should carry it until the end of filming because it should be on same jacket on the film.

Tomorrow we have another shooting on the sea for woman diver's work in the morning and the ma park in the afternoon.

I hope the weather will be fine.
I cross my fingers.

Third day for shooting.
We had a shooting on Haenye in the morning and The ma park in the afternoon.

"How long have you been Haenye?" I asked.

"Well...not that long, around 10 years"

Right then, another haenye broke into our interview

"She is lying to you, she's been married for 60 years"

Then the haenye gave a grumble reply.

"Well, it's real irony that I've lived with the stiff-necked old man for 60 years.
With the words every one bursted laughing.

Most of haenyes in there are 70's and early 80's.
We thanks that they allowed us to go dive with them. It was really lucky day.

The shooting in The ma park in the afternoon was great as well. Even though I've seen this show so many times I think today's was the best of all.

I anticipate that the result will come out great.

4th day for shooting.
On hearing about one ancient picture we started pursuing horses and today we visited at Seong-up village for that.

In there we are finding out new knowledge about horses.

It was a good chance to have another perspective to Seong-up village.

7th day for shooting.
We've already come half way on all of the shooting a documentary.

If you drive for only 10 minutes to get out of the crowded city, you will face a vast green prairie which has the back ground of NoKome Orum. And 'Jeju horse riding park' is located on right over there.

We learned the differences between Jeju horse and Halla horse, the problems and prospect of the business.
Most of all, the most interesting thing is that we learned a know-how of breeding horses.

Well, we were so interested in (Micheal Seo)서 명운's life story and his perspective of horses.(he is an owner of the horse riding park) And then we didn't notice the day already gone.

He said "I have two sons but actually I have more than 120 sons because the horses on the field are my children". we could see how much he loves the horses.

8th day for shooting.
Everybody starts getting tired.

The work is becoming harder and still 6 days more to go.

I think shooting for today is the hardest one so far.

Normally it takes about 5 hours for Yongsil course but it took almost 8 hours with shooting.

No lunch today, we had just cup noodles, one piece of chocolate bar and a cup of coffee at the top of Halla Mt.

Sam and Eric apparently have lost weight for a week. Sam even got allergy to sunlight. Well, I know It's difficult and stressful to work in foreign country. However, I can see their passion.

We should eat more food to cheer up from tomorrow.

10th day for shooting.
Now, it's turning to the end almost finishing.
Even though it's hard work we got cheered up by the article which we are doing.

11th day for shooting
It had been rained all morning and barely shot in the afternoon.
So beautiful scenic came out after raining.
I have learned a lot about Jeju horses for 10 days. Now, we have only two days to finish.

12th day for shooting.
I think I ruined my final interview because of physical fatigue from long time shooting and sudden tooth ache.

Actually I've never been on local TV as even a small role of extra but unbelievably I was picked up a host of French documentary.

"Well, You been doing well so far and you don't have even a description. Do you?" I am complimenting myself now.

Before they arrived here, I thought I would be on some scenes on the documentary. I never expected I would lead whole documentary.

However, We have only one day to wrap up and we will bid farewell tomorrow.

This documentary is due to air on Equdia channel on 8th September

Last day for shooting.
We have learned a lot about Jeju horses with filming for 14 days.

Susan and Grsori area are the places we've spent time a lot because these places are the mecca of Jeu horses.

According to history, Mongolians brought 160 finest horses from Mogolia which were selected for breeding with Jeju original horses and the place 'Susan' was the first place they arrived.

And in Joseon dynasty the central government established a big horse ranch in Gasiri area in the vicinity of Susan to provide the main land with horses.

However, the Jeju provincial government planed to built a new airport here. It will destroys not only the villages but also hundreds years of culture and natural environment of horse

"Where can we raise horses"? Upon filming a horse farmer's deep sigh hurt my heart.
